Handloom weaving is a tradition in Nepal that has been practiced by the Rai and Limbu ethnic groups for generations. The skill has been passed down through the ages, and weaving is considered sacred because of its mysterious origins. Nepal’s textile industry dates back to around 3,000 BCE, and the trade predates the Silk Road by over 2,000 years.The handloom sector is a symbol of the country’s cultural heritage and an important source of livelihood. Over 70% of handloom weavers and allied workers are women, and the sector is key to women empowerment.
